While working with Mary Kay, a retired teacher/principal with a passion for supporting kids through experiences of loss and grief, I heard more than a few delightful stories of her mom.
“My 94 year old mother has just finished a mild chemo/radiation series in London, Ontario. I stayed with her at Thameswood Lodge.
My mother hates travelling and will avoid “a trip” at all costs. One morning as we were preparing to leave for her treatment she said, “Honey, it has been a long time since we have been on a trip.” I was shocked but calmly asked, “Where would you like to go, Mom?” She stopped what she was doing and looked at me in surprise and said, “We are on it!.…..We are staying at a lodge, meeting great people, eating delicious meals and we go on an excursion every day!” (traveling by limo to the treatment centre was the daily excursion). It is just like going on a cruise!” Then as an add on she said, “And all of us here are in the same boat. We all have cancer.”
Go girl! Happy Cruising to Mary Kay’s Mom!
