Exploring Palliative Care for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PWIDD): A Path to Enabling Good Practice

13/12/2024

Palliative care is a compassionate, whole-person approach that adapts to meet people where they are, honoring their unique needs and circumstances. However, one group that remains underserved in palliative care is people living with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). Ensuring equitable and quality care for this population is essential because getting palliative care right for PWIDD is getting it right for all.

In 2019, four distinct groups of professionals who recognized the inequitable access to quality palliative care for People with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (PWIDD) came together to discuss and address the gaps and challenges experienced by this population and their support systems. This collaboration marked the beginning of a journey toward creating resources and a working toolkit to address the unique needs of PWIDD. Their goal was to build the capacity of Developmental Services and Palliative/Health Care Providers, ensuring PWIDD are included as integral participants in their own care plans.

This collaborative approach emphasizes that addressing the unique needs of PWIDD isn’t just about fixing a broken system for one group—it’s about elevating the standard of palliative care for all. The integration of Developmental Services Specialists into healthcare teams is vital to ensure that individuals with IDD receive care that prioritizes their needs and reflects their lived experiences.

In January’s webinar, Janet Elder, BScN, RN, CHPCN(C), and her team—Teresa Donaldson and Michael Mackenzie—will explore these critical issues, focusing on the intersection of developmental services and palliative care. They will discuss:

  • The historical context of the lived experience of PWIDD and the barriers they have faced.
  • The current state of palliative care for PWIDD, including the gaps and challenges that remain.
  • How IDD etiology’s, which can be life-limiting, combined with increased life expectancy, underscore the growing need for equitable, quality palliative care.
  • Practical resources and strategies that reflect the needs of PWIDD.
  • toolkit designed to address the unique palliative care needs of PWIDD.

This session will highlight tools and strategies for delivering compassionate and effective care while emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration across developmental services and healthcare disciplines.
