Fighting Stigma with Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

15/01/2024

What is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month?

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is an annual campaign organized by the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The campaign takes place throughout January and aims to educate the public about the impact of these conditions on individuals, families, and communities.

The Importance of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month plays a crucial role in promoting understanding and empathy for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The campaign strives to spark conversations, increase knowledge, decrease stigma, and advocate for better support and care for individuals living with dementia.

The Experiences of Those Living with Alzheimer’s

While Alzheimer’s Awareness Month may come to a close at the end of January, the experiences of people living with Alzheimer’s continue year-round. It’s important to recognize that the impact of Alzheimer’s disease extends far beyond a single month, and ongoing support and awareness are essential.

How You Support Loved Ones and Family

Download the following article (from our text, Integrating a Palliative Approach: Essentials for Personal Support Workers) that explains what Alzheimer’s is and what the different stages look like. Understanding a loved one’s decline with Alzheimer’s can help family to manage day to day life and to prepare for changes to come.

We encourage you to download and share the article on social media with friends, family and colleagues to help spread awareness, increase understanding, and decrease the stigma of Alzheimer’s disease.

Other ways to get involved include participating in local events sponsored by Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, or volunteer with organizations dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for education, understanding, and support for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. By raising awareness and fostering empathy, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive society for all those impacted by these conditions.
