Exploring Palliative Care for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PWIDD): A Path to Enabling Good Practice

Palliative care is a compassionate, whole-person approach that adapts to meet people where they are, honoring their unique needs and circumstances. In the last few years, the palliative care community has been striving for equity, striving to ensure that all individuals, have access to palliative care. However, one group that remains underserved in palliative care is people living with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). Ensuring equitable and quality care for this population is essential because getting palliative care right for PWIDD is getting it right for all.

In this webinar, Janet Elder, Michael Mackenzie, Teresa Donaldson,, an innovative inter-professional team, including people from the palliative care and developmental services sector, introduced the unique needs, tools and strategies, required to deliver good palliative care to people with IDD.

This was a wonderful learning experience. Invite your students and colleagues to listen to this session.

  • Be introduced to the distinct and complex palliative needs of PWIDD
  • Recognize that PWIDD  have distinct needs and require utilization of IDD specific tools across the continuum of care
